The Space Between
In fast environments, reacting quickly looks strong. But sometimes the real strength is waiting long enough to see what’s driving you.

I’ve been thinking about something I’ve done for years without ever naming it.
In fast environments, where decisions are expected quickly, I developed a habit.
When something hit hard, I didn’t always respond right away.
Sometimes I would sit on it for a day.
Sometimes for a week.
Occasionally longer.
Not to avoid it.
Not to manipulate timing.
And not because I didn’t know what I thought.
But because I wanted to see what was actually driving my reaction.
An email that felt disrespectful.
A contract that didn’t sit right.
A disagreement in a meeting.
A decision that would impact people.
The first reaction is rarely the cleanest one.
It’s usually powered by something underneath.
Ego.
Fear.
Control.
Defensiveness.
Momentum.
In fast environments, reacting quickly looks strong.
But reacting quickly often means reacting automatically.
So I waited.
Not forever.
Just long enough for the emotional charge to settle.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was creating a pause.
A space between stimulus and response.
Back then, I would have called it discipline.
Or maybe patience.
Or just my personality.
Only recently have I connected it to awareness.
And to the idea that most of us are running scripts we didn’t consciously choose.
The need to be right.
The need to win.
The need to protect position.
The need to avoid looking weak.
Those scripts run fast.
The pause slows them down just enough to see them.
And once you see them, you have options.
You can still hold your ground.
You can still say no.
You can still make the hard call.
But now it’s chosen.
Not automatic.
That’s what I mean when I say, “The Pause.”
It isn’t a program.
It isn’t a productivity trick.
It isn’t about becoming softer or more spiritual.
It’s simply the willingness to notice what’s driving you before you move.
You can stay the course.
You can pivot.
Both are valid.
But when the decision is conscious, it feels different.
For years, I was practicing The Pause without ever defining it.
Now I finally have language for it.
If you’re curious, I wrote a deeper reflection on the site simply called “The Pause.”
Nothing formal.
Nothing structured.
Just space.
Just enough room to choose.
As you pause remember to... JUST BREATHE.
