The Pause
A small space between stimulus and response.
The world rewards speed. Quick answers. Strong opinions. Immediate reaction.
The pause interrupts that rhythm. Not with a technique. Not with a system. Just with awareness.
The pause is the moment where you notice what’s happening inside you before you do what you always do.
Defend. Explain. Fix. Perform. Freeze.
The pause doesn’t promise calm. It doesn’t sell certainty. It simply creates room.
Room to listen. Room to choose. Room to say nothing.
You can stay the course. You can change direction. Both are valid.
The wobble is the point.
What it is
The Pause is a practice of noticing. Noticing the script you’re running. Noticing the story you inherited. Noticing the pressure you’ve normalized.
It is simple. But it is not always easy.
What it is not
It is not a program. It is not a performance. It is not a brand of peace.
No incense required. No agreement required. No “new identity” required.
A small way to try it
Next time you feel the surge to react, try this:
Inhale slowly for a count of four.
Hold for four.
Exhale for four.
Hold for four.
Do that once. Just one round.
Then ask:
what am I about to do out of habit?
That’s the pause.
Always remember to ... Just breathe.
