Liberate Your Spirit: Unveil the Myths, Embrace Authentic Yoga
Without awareness, yoga is just movement. It becomes another exercise routine, another task on the to-do list. But with awareness, yoga becomes something more.

"Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self." – The Bhagavad Gita
If I tell you I am a yoga-minded person, what comes to mind? For starters, it does not mean I subscribe only to the physical aspects of yoga, nor does it mean I follow a rigid, traditional path. To me, yoga is not just a workout, and it is not just a spiritual practice. It is a way of being, rooted in mindfulness, focus, and authenticity.
Yet, yoga is often wrapped in myths and misconceptions. Many see it as either a trendy fitness routine filled with handstands and perfect poses or a strict mystical practice meant only for those on a spiritual quest. Neither of these fully captures the essence of yoga.
When I tell someone I am leading a session at a local yoga studio, they immediately picture the stereotypical Western yoga instructor. They assume I spend my days effortlessly flowing through poses, dressed in sleek athletic wear, probably drinking a green smoothie afterward. But nothing could be further from the truth.
In fact, my sessions have nothing to do with stretching. There are no sun salutations, no perfect handstands, and definitely no pressure to touch your toes. Instead, they focus on the mind-body connection, breathing, and meditation, the aspects of yoga that go far beyond movement.
And let’s be honest, I am 60 years old, and no one wants to see me in a pair of Lululemon.
Western culture often portrays yoga as a physical exercise, marketed as a way to build flexibility, strength, and reduce stress. While those benefits are real, they are only part of the bigger picture. Yoga is a practice of awareness, self-inquiry, and deep presence, things that do not require a mat or a studio.
On the other hand, some believe yoga is only for those who dedicate their lives to it, requiring hours of meditation, strict discipline, or detachment from the modern world. That is not the full story either.
Yoga is not just for the ultra-fit, the ultra-spiritual, or the ultra-dedicated. Yoga is for anyone who wants to feel more present, more connected, and more in tune with themselves.
Yoga is yours to define.
Without awareness, yoga is just movement. It becomes another exercise routine, another task on the to-do list. But with awareness, yoga becomes something more.
Awareness is what separates yoga from simple stretching. It is the act of truly feeling each breath, each movement, and each moment as it happens. It is about being fully present instead of letting the mind drift to past regrets or future worries.
For me, yoga is not about touching my toes. It is about touching my truth. It is about showing up on the mat and in my life with presence, honesty, and a willingness to listen. It is about slowing down enough to hear what my body, mind, and heart are telling me.
Yoga is yours to define, which means it does not have to look like anyone else’s.
So how do you move beyond the myths and create a practice that truly serves you?
Let go of expectations. You do not need to be flexible, strong, or experienced. Yoga is not about perfect poses. It is about how you feel in them.
Start with breath. Your breath is the foundation of awareness. Before moving, take a moment to simply breathe and notice how you feel.
Find what resonates with you. Explore different styles such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, or Restorative until you find one that feels right. Remember that yoga is more than physical postures. Meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness are all part of the practice.
Bring yoga into your daily life. Yoga is not confined to the mat. Being mindful in your actions, breathing deeply in moments of stress, and moving with intention are all ways to practice yoga off the mat.
Define it for yourself. There is no right or wrong way to practice yoga. If it connects you to your breath, body, and mind, then it is yoga. No validation needed.
For me, yoga is not about looking a certain way. It is about feeling connected, aware, and alive.
Yoga is not about following someone else’s path. It is about carving out my own.
Yoga is yours to define.
So forget the expectations, forget the myths, and step into a practice that is truly your own. Because that is the true essence of yoga.
